ROCKER ROLLER SELECTION GUIDE

How to Choose the Correct Rocker Roller Suspension Set

Choosing the correct Rocker Roller suspension requires more than simply selecting a load rating. Consider the spring capacity, number of leaves, spring centre-bolt position, axle spacing, wheel and tyre clearance and whether the trailer is tandem or tri-axle.

TSPA offers Rocker Roller suspension sets from 2,000kg through to 6,000kg, including off-centre and centred spring configurations.

1

Check the Required Capacity

Select a suspension set with the appropriate load rating for your trailer application.

2

Check the Spring Configuration

Rocker Roller springs are available with either off-centre or centred spring centre bolts.

3

Check Tyre Clearance

The spring centre-bolt position changes the axle spacing, which affects the available clearance between the tyres.

4

Check Tandem or Tri-Axle

Most of the range is designed for tandem trailers. A centred 9-leaf configuration is also available for the 6,000kg tri-axle system.

Off-Centre vs Centred Rocker Roller Springs

One of the most important differences between Rocker Roller spring sets is the position of the centre bolt in the spring. This position affects where the axle sits and therefore the distance between the trailer axles.

Off-Centre Springs

With an off-centre spring, the centre bolt is positioned toward the centre rocker. This positions the axles closer together.

Closer axle spacing can help reduce tyre drag during turning. These springs are commonly used with smaller-diameter wheel and tyre combinations where sufficient clearance remains between the tyres.

TSPA off-centre Rocker Roller springs are available in 5, 6 and 7 leaf configurations.

Centred Springs

With a centred spring, the centre bolt is positioned in the centre of the spring. This provides greater axle spacing.

The additional spacing provides more clearance between the tyres and can accommodate larger-diameter wheel and tyre combinations where required.

TSPA centred tandem Rocker Roller springs are available in 7 leaf and 9 leaf configurations.

Wheel Size, Axle Spacing & Tyre Clearance

The wheel and tyre sizes shown in TSPA technical drawings and product descriptions are provided as a guide only.

The important consideration is the available clearance between the tyres. Off-centre springs position the axles closer together, while centred springs provide greater axle spacing.

Different wheel and tyre sizes may be suitable provided there is adequate clearance between the tyres and the combined load rating of the tyres is appropriate for the rated capacity of the suspension setup.

Important: Do not select a Rocker Roller suspension set based on wheel diameter alone. Check the suspension capacity, tyre load ratings and the physical clearance available between the tyres before installation.

Why Are There Two 3,000kg 7-Leaf Options?

TSPA offers both an off-centre 7-leaf and a centred 7-leaf Rocker Roller spring configuration. Both use 60mm wide, 6mm thick leaves and are available in 3,000kg suspension sets.

The difference is the spring centre-bolt position and the resulting axle spacing. The correct choice depends on the wheel and tyre combination and the clearance required between the tyres.

6,000kg Tri-Axle Rocker Roller Suspension

The TSPA 6,000kg tri-axle Rocker Roller system uses centred 9-leaf springs with 6mm thick, 60mm wide leaves.

The TSPA technical layout shows approximately 900mm axle centres. As with the tandem systems, wheel sizes shown on the technical drawing are a guide and the final installation must provide suitable tyre clearance and load capacity.

Not Sure Which Rocker Roller Set You Need?

Check your required suspension capacity, existing spring configuration, wheel and tyre size and available tyre clearance. If you're still unsure, contact the TSPA team before ordering.
